Photographs can raise as many questions as they answer. At first glance, this appears to be the likeness of a seated young woman wearing a plain dress adorned only with a simple brooch and adorned with stylish tresses formed into bottle curls. But look more closely. Is the gender of this sitter a certainty? Without any identification connected to this beautiful, well preserved 1/6th plate tinted daguerreotype, we can only imagine who this “ordinary” person may have been?
