One of the important developments related to the invention of the tintype was increased light sensitivity which allowed for more casual and expressive portraits to be taken in studio. The advent of the tintype allowed makers and sitters to create allegories or visual stories which could have universal or personal meaning.
In this marvelous portrait, a group -- perhaps a family -- is gathered around to read and hear the contents of a letter. Is this a missive from a long lost relative? A father trekking west to find fortune in the gold diggins? A soldier reassuring his concerned family about his service at a far-away place? The mystery is unsolvable, intriguing....and wonderful.
Housed in a full case with a split hinge, the 1/6th plate size plate is in good condition. The tones and sharpness are very good. There is an oval shaped mat abrasion that follows the edge of the ornate brass mat.
