On the back of this terrific carte de visite is the inscription "Canadian GTR Engine." Unfortunately I have been unable to determine which locomotive this was or when it was active.
The Grand Trunk Railway of Canada was a system based primarily in Canada West (now known as Ontario) and Canada East (Quebec and the Maritimes). Chartered in 1852, the GTR purchased five local railways to link Toronto with Sarnia on the west, and Montreal on the east. Over time, and with funding from British financiers, the GTR purchased or leased 50 other railways and constructed new lines so that by 1869 the GTR -- with 2055km of track -- was longest railroad in the world.
This albumen carte de visite c. 1860 is in excellent condition with very good tonality and excellent sharpness. The mount is unevenly cut along the bottom, but is otherwise excellent.
