Niagara Suspension Bridge
William England
Albumen Stereo Card
USA
c.1860
William England, born 1830, began his career as a daguerreotypist active in the U.K.. In the 1850's he was engaged by the London Stereoscopic Company as their chief photographer and began to travel through-out Europe taking breath-taking landscape views -- especially views of the mountains of Switzerland and views along the Rhine in Germany. Shortly thereafter he travelled to North America to produce spectacular images which were among the first North American views to be published abroad commercially. His precise, yet picturesque photographs of Niagara, Canada West, Quebec and the U.S. Eastern seaboard were highly praised and are today very aggressively collected.
In this great composition, England has produced a stereotype of the foot and carriage-way section of the then brand new Grand Trunk Railway Suspension Bridge in Niagara Falls designed by John Roebling. The nearly pristine stereoview has rich tones and excellent clarity. The luscious purple mount is in very good condition with only some slight edge-chipping. Descriptive text appears on the back side of the card.
