The tradition of painting photographs dates back to the pioneering years of the 1840’s when artists who painted miniatures were hired to embellish daguerreotype portraits with life-like flesh tones. The lovely, bucolic image of a mill and stream shown above is a gelatin silver print c.1920.
The 4.5” X 6.25 “ print is expertly over-painted to give the image the appearance of a painted landscape. The photograph is beautifully preserved in an archival mount replaced in the original gold frame.
